Attack on Titan…My Review and Opinion!

I am not a big anime geek, as a matter of fact, I was introduced to anime in 2010 when a couple of my coworkers were talking about the new Bleach episodes and I was interested in seeing what it was about. Anime was something that I watched as a kid on Saturday morning cartoons when that was popular, but I did not realize how big it was until my two coworkers were talking about it. I have literally only watched two anime series in my life and I actually like them both….Bleach and Attack on Titan. I will post up a blog review about Bleach another day, but for now I want talk write about Attack on Titan since it is fresh on my mind.

Before I get into this review, I would like to let you know that I have the memory of a goldfish. I am kind of like the human version of Dory from Finding Nemo. That is why I cannot jump into a Bleach review right now because it has been about 4 years since I watched it and I would have to go back and look at some of the episodes.

In the Anime ” Attack on Titan”, the story starts out in the year 845 in an area called the “Zhiganshia District”. The main characters are Erin Yeager, his adopted sister Mikasa Ackerman, and his childhood friend Armin Arlert. They live in a city surrounded by three layers of tall thick walls to protect them from tall humanoid like creatures called “Titans”. Now these three walls have names. The outermost wall is named Wall Maria, the middle wall is Wall Rose, and the innermost wall is Wall Sina. Now 100 years prior to the beginning of the story, there were a group of Titans that attacked that city nearly wiping out humanity. So in order for the people to protect themselves, the people in that community built those three walls.

The Titans do not have any reproductive organs and they eat humans. Now when I first heard about that I thought that was a little weird. Tall giant human like creatures that eat humans and have no reproductive organs, but the visual and the story is good when you start to watch it.The only way to defeat and kill a Titan is to take a sword and cut the back of the neck right where the spine is. Cutting off a limb or hand or even stabbing them in their heart wont work, their bodies will regenerate unless you hit them behind the neck right above the spine. Anyways, the attack was in the year 745 and the story starts off in the year 845. So at this time when they are introducing the characters and whats going on in the show, most of the people have not ever seen a Titan at this point. They just know that they are out there.

Not only is the city protected by three layers of walls, they also have their own military and they are divided into three branches.  You have the Survey Corps, which they go outside of the city or the compound or the walls, whatever you want to call it, and reclaim the land and also fight Titans. You have the upmost respect if you join the Survey Corps but they have a very high casualty rate. In episode 16 they show a recruiting ceremony for the Survey Corps and you see the majority of the people leave. The branch below that is the Garrison Regiment, and they guard the walls and the civilians. Third is the Military Police Brigade who guard the royal family and they pretty much have a laid back job.

Here is what happens in a nutshell without giving away too many spoilers. One day an armored Titan, which basically a Titan thats bigger and stronger then the others, kicked through the Wall Maria gate and that basically led to other Titans coming in the city and eating a bunch of the civilians. One of those civilians that was eaten during the attack was Eren Yeager’s mother.

Eren_vows_to_kill_the_Titans After witnessing his own mother being eaten by a Titan, he decided to devote his life to fighting Titans and protecting the community. And the only way he felt he could do that was to join the military.

attackontitan-1Mikasa and Armin joined him as well, fighting together for a good cause. There are a few twists in the story that will keep you wanting to watch more episodes and your antennas up. This is not your average story where everybody that is introduced to you in the episodes live throughout the entire season. And that to me is what makes a good anime, movie, or show.

Attack-on-Titan

So why do I like this anime? Well for one, the visuals are pretty clean and bright. The colors are vibrant, it doesn’t look old at all because it is a fairly new anime that just came out a year and a half ago. The storyline is pretty good and you can feel where some of the characters are coming from. Eren and Mikasa lost their love ones and many people can relate to that. They wanted to fight for the cause, they felt a lot of physical and emotional pain, they witnessed a lot of blood being shed for their people, they wanted peace, at times they were happy, at times they were scared, and so on and so on. They took a lot of losses in Attack on Titan, it didn’t just seem one sided as if they were just winning the whole entire time and there were no difficulties. That is what I like about it.

The only thing I didn’t like was seeing the same scenery every episode. I am A.D.D. lol, I can admit that, so when I just see in every episode that they are in the same city or town the whole entire time then I get kind of bored. Like in Bleach they go from one side of the city to another, to meeting different people that takes them to different worlds, and then they battle in secluded locations. That is why I was so in tune to Bleach. But hey, these are just my views and opinions. Another thing is, there were a few parts that just seemed kind of corny and unrealistic to me and I do not want to give away any spoilers on that.

Forgive me for my bad punctuation and run on sentences, I am only human, BUT……. If I had to give this anime a rating I would have to give it an 8-8.5 out of 10. I watched it on Crunchyroll which is an app that I have downloaded on my iPad. No fillers. Fillers are basically episodes of the show that doesn’t follow the storyline and the episode will be about something totally different that has nothing to do with the story so the writers can take their time finishing the story I guess. I don’t know that’s what I got from it, if you know more about it then correct me lol.

This has been my review and I thank you for taking the time out to read my blog. And like I said in my other blog, I am not ashamed to say that I do not know. I am not a big Anime person, I have never read a manga in my life. That’s another thing that I forgot to mention. People that have watched Attack on Titan told me that the manga is much better, which if you don’t know what a manga is it’s basically the book version. That’s with anything though, the book is always better and more detailed then the movie or tv series. Thank you for reading, check out my instagram page, share this post, check out my beats on Soundcloud, like my Facebook page and enjoy life.
